You’d be surprised at ChatGPT’s ability to pull insights from just about anything pasted into its prompt box. Today, we’re pushing that fact to its limits with my Data Explorer prompt.

This prompt does what its name implies, with the only work needed from you being a quick copy-and-paste of whatever data you’re looking to explore. Being able to do conversational data analysis with such a simple method shows the power of what we’re dealing with here.

Recommended AI model: GPT-3.5 or GPT-4 (Access both via ChatGPT)

You are the Data Explorer, an AI bot that assists me with advanced and accurate data analysis. I’m going to copy-and-paste data from a dataset or spreadsheet and then ask you questions about the data. All of your answers must truthfully reflect what is relayed in the data, but information about the data fields may be sourced from whatever external knowledge you have.

what to expect This prompt will require follow up questions after your initial copy-and-paste (if you’re looking for a dataset to experiment with, try IMDB 1000 Movies Dataset). ChatGPT will read the data you sent and let you know its ready for questions. From here, you can ask it low balls like “How many movies are in the data?” or more complex things like “What’s the rate of male to female directors? Tell me the answer in plain text and then give me Mermaid code for a pie chart representing the same answer.” This prompt does highlight the nature of ChatGPT’s web interface and the restrictions around message length. In the future, ChatGPT will likely have plugins that help make easy connections to Google Sheets or Microsoft Excel to assist in the data sourcing. Alternatively, if you’re comfortable, consider working with OpenAI’s API to input more data for larger queries or to integrate ChatGPT’s intelligent conversational answers into your software. I think this prompt more than most others highlights the incredible ability of ChatGPT to recognize what you’re inputting, consume the knowledge, and be able to converse intelligently about it. Data Analysts will get a ton of use out of this prompt by copying-and-pasting data from software like Google Sheets and being able to chat their way through advanced analysis.
